  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Happy New Year to you as well, Claire! May you and your parents' basement be very happy. :)

It was great seeing you in Chi-town! That big pic of the ferris wheel is great!! I love it. BTW, I'd live in your parents' basement ANY time! Best in 2008!

Happy New Year, Claire! Your photos here are great -- as usual.

Great post, Claire!

2008 is going to bring lots of great things.

Happy New Year, Claire, while it's still new. All good things in 2008, those you're planning and much more.

But you're parents' basement is really nice.

Thanks all! (I know Amanda, I make it sound so much worse than it is. I have my own working fireplace, for pete's sake.)

I hope the next year holds good things for all of us!

It was fantastic getting to see you, thought the weather was tres shitty.

And I have the utmost faith as a person who knows you that you are in a better place than you would have been had you stayed in Chi-town, whether or not that is currently apparent to you.

But I'm not gonna beat the drum of optimism, here. You are allowed your funk. And gin.

I love Chicago, and your photos made me so nostalgic to go back. I guess that wasn't really correct grammar, but I am speaking from the heart. ;-)

Good luck in 2008, may it be filled with much growth! Sounds like yours will be.
